In this episode as we talk to Truro City Football Club owners Andrew Unger and Duane Dorazio.
We recorded in the club's city centre boardroom at lunchtime on the day of the Dagenham and Redbridge match.
Andrew is based in Toronto and Duane in Pennsylvania so an obvious first question ‘How did you get involved with Truro City?’
It’s an insightful 16 minutes during which we cover many aspects of football ownership plus we ask a couple of questions sent in by fans about the stadium development and away travel. Duane is the Chair of the TCFC Community Trust and he talks passionately about that.
We start the show with a round up of the two bank holiday weekend matches with Truro City Director of Football Alex Black.

Welcome everybody to the Truro City Football Club podcast, episode number five. So we've got some very special guests on the show this week. We have a couple of the key owners of the football club. We have Mr. Dwayne Durazio and Mr. Andrew Unger. Now Dwayne is from Pennsylvania, Andrew is from Toronto, and they were both here for the game against Dagaman and Redbridge. They flew in on the Thursday and Friday. So we managed to catch up with them prior to the Dagenham game in the uh in the club offices near the cinema. So we've got a fascinating conversation that we recorded. So I hope you'll uh all enjoy that. And a couple of you uh as listeners uh or or fans asked a couple of questions about the stadium development on the south side and about away travel for fans. So both those questions are asked, uh, so we're doing that as well. And then we're gonna go and catch up with uh well before that, but this is going out Tuesday, and this morning um we recorded with Dwayne and Andrew on Saturday morning, but this morning, Tuesday morning, I've done a uh catch-up with Alex Black, Director of Football, to talk about the two games, the Dagenham game and the Dorking game. So that we covered both of those games, so this is why we're a day late going out this week because of the match yesterday. Now, before we do any of that, I just want to say a big thank you to everybody who's tuning in because uh the listener the listener figures have kind of surprised us. So we're delighted with them. So uh keep tuning in, that's great. And if you do enjoy the show, then do let us know, because uh that's really important that we get a feel for uh what you think of the show and tell your friends about it as well, because they may not know about podcasts, they may not know about Truro City Football Club Podcasts. So please spread the word for us. That would be uh fantastic. And we have had a couple of messages in, including one from Tim Singleton in Minnesota. So uh thank you very much, Tim, uh, for your message. Now, I did read, I am going to read out Tim's message during the interview with Andrew and Duane. So listen out for that, Tim. But fantastic that you've uh found a football club you want to follow and you're enjoying this podcast. And also to Andrew, who said, uh thanks very much for the podcast, really enjoying the episode. So now I'm not 100% sure which Andrew that is, but I think it's the Andrew who might sit next to me with his lovely wife Jill uh on Saturdays uh at home uh well and Tuesdays at home matches. So if it is you, Andrew, that's great. Thank you very much for that. If it's not you, Andrew, then anybody called Andrew who's listening in, thanks very much for that. And don't forget the easiest way to get in touch with us is to press the get in touch button, which is in the show notes. So if you scroll down where wherever you're listening to this podcast, you will see some uh information about the episode, and then there will be a button that says get in touch. Uh and if you do press that button, you can then send us a text message or a voice message. And um just remember to tell us who you are because it it won't tell us otherwise. We only see what you send, so uh it doesn't say this is from whoever. Um, and if you send us a voice message, then we may well hopefully include it in a future episode as well. So uh so yeah, so thank you very much for listening, everybody. Apparently, we have listeners in 15 countries now as well, so that's great, including two listeners in Uruguay, who uh of course were the winners of the I think the first two World Cups, weren't they? 1930, 1934, and all that sort of stuff. So, so we've got a pack show for you, folks. And uh in the next episode, by the way, which will be what, episode number six, which will be uh we're looking for Tuesday, the 8th of September for that, because we are planning to talk to Stuart Yetten, uh Truro's assistant manager before the game against Leicester City uh that evening, the National League Cup game. So we're gonna be asking Stuart, you know, what does an assistant manager do? And also getting the insights behind the scenes. So we want to find out what do they talk, what do him and John Asky talk about during the game when we see them, but we maybe we obviously don't necessarily hear what they're talking about. How do they make team selection? When do they announce the team? How do they tell people they've been left out the side? All that sort of stuff. Right, let's crack on, let's find out, let's talk to Alex Black about the games over the weekend at Dagenham and then subsequently at Dorking. Uh so uh Alex, you know, two games over the weekend, bank holiday weekend, contrasting fortunes, probably, by the sounds of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but um, you know, really good, two really good performances, uh Dagenham and Redbridge at home. Um, the team were magnificent, really. You know, a lot of people saying it's one of the best performances they've seen at the TCS, and you know, thoroughly deserved uh win against the the top of the league and uh played very, very well in that game.
SPEAKER_01And uh, yeah, I mean you're absolutely right. The social media channels were full of wow, what a great performance! Clearly, you know, the league leaders beaten 3-0 and uh and of course that fantastic free kick goal, which people will be sharing and talking about for ages.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's great. Get you know, get some goals and uh and play really well. But you know, we then went to you know, really, really tough turnaround for us. You know, we you know I didn't even play, but I've had to sort of uh you know driving up to to the coach on Sunday came around very quickly, and um, you know, no chance to do get on the pitch again. Um you know it's a long way for us to have to go at such short notice, but you know the team played well. You know, we made six changes, which we kind of had to to freshen up, shows the the strength of the strength of the squad, but um, you know, we just can't be risking injuries to some of the some of the players, you know, because if they have to play on a Saturday afternoon and then the on a Monday, and in between they've got to have like a five-hour drive, it's uh you know the injury risk is really high. And the other players came in and performed really well, um you know, no doubt about it. Dorking uh another one of the top teams. Um we will get to some point in the podcast when I'm saying that we won't be playing against the top teams, but you know, if you look at it so far this season, you know, you look at um our away games, we've had Chelmsford away, one of the favourites for the league. We've had uh um Dorking away, who were up there in the current in the playoffs, and the one everybody thought was easier is Tunbridge, and I think we won there, and they're like I think they're currently fourth in the league. So one of the one of the top teams, you know, take that to our home fixtures, Maidenhead, who were in the playoffs last year and haven't had much turnaround, and then everybody's tipped the title. Uh Dagman Redbridge at home. Incr we must have had the toughest start of the season of any team, I would say.
SPEAKER_01Well, on episode one, uh you drew attention to that, if you remember. You said, you know, we got really five really tough games. So, you know, if we could you know come out of those games with ten goals, uh not ten goals, ten points, just one goal conceded. So um is that is would you have taken that at the start of those five games?
SPEAKER_00Would have snapped your hand off. Yeah, absolutely snapped your hand off with that at the before the season started. Um, but I think more pleasingly we can look at where our where our squad is, how we look fitness-wise, strength wise, determination, all those things we talked about in the the early podcast. That's that's coming through, and you know, three away games, three tough-away games, only two home games in the league, you know, to be averaging two points a game. If we keep that up, we'll be there or thereabouts, definitely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh from your point of view, you know, as responsible for bringing players into the club, you know, your latest signing scored with his first touch in that game. That can't be a bad start. You know, you must have been pleased with that.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, really pleased, you know, and uh especially with the owners sat next to me in the in the stand. Um it's like a j we we tend to not do things normally at Truerow, do we? There's always something going on, and that's that's sort of typical of us, isn't it? We make a big new sign in and uh very first touch scores a goal. But um, you know, he got his first Omar got his first start against uh Dorking as well, and you can see that we you know we've got a really good player on our hands there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, and uh I think it caught a few people by surprise, the six changes to the lineup, but it also, as you said, just shows the the strength in depth, really. And the and it didn't well, listening to the commentary, you saw it live obviously, it didn't feel as though it affected the way the team played.
SPEAKER_00No, look, who whoever wins the league this year and whoever else gets promoted and in the playoffs, it'll be because they have the best squad. Um, you know, we were the year we won the league, if we're honest, we were very fortunate in not getting too many serious injuries. We went with a very lean, lean squad. Probability of doing that again is is difficult. Um, but I think you know, we finished the game, um, although Dorkin might sound a bit ironic because they got the last minute winner, although they quite rightly uh very pleased with themselves. Um, I know they're a bit of the walking wounded at the moment, and you listen to Mark White, their owners, sort of comments afterwards, they're already patching themselves up, but we go into our next home game at Chesham. Everybody fresh and strong. We got three home games in the league on the bounce, and yeah, really good opportunity now.
SPEAKER_01Wow, yeah, absolutely. So started with Chesham on uh Saturday, and then there's a National League Cup against Leicester on uh Tuesday. So we'll be following all the action and uh keeping up with things. So um yeah, so you're sitting here, Alex, feeling pretty positive.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've just got off the phone with with the manager and had a really good conversation, and yeah, we're really I'm really pleased with where we're at. You know, a lot of people questioned our sort of when we came down, is there gonna be hangover from you know last season's performances? You know, I'm sure anybody can see our last home game. Certainly no hangover there, is there?
SPEAKER_01Well goodness, no, no, that was that was terrific performance all round by uh it was just great, just great. So uh so everyone listening to this will be looking forward to the next uh, as you say, three home games uh and seeing uh similar similar play, I imagine, and hopefully for you know similar results to the Dagenham one.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, that's what we'll definitely be trying for, and that's a challenge for the for the squad, isn't it? They've you know they've had a really tough start, they've done really well. Now we've got a bunch of games coming up, which on paper potentially slightly less challenging, but um obviously it's not not played on paper, it's played on grass, isn't it? And we've got to go out and go out and do the job. But you know, I I think as long as we're professional, everybody keeps up the levels, then we should expect some good results.
SPEAKER_01Well, um this podcast, you know, we're gonna be hearing in a minute or two from uh from Dwayne and Andrew, uh two of the owners. Uh so uh that we recorded with them before Saturday's game, but uh I imagine they enjoyed Saturday's game.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, oh yeah, very much so. They they enjoyed it, and it's great of them to come over, they've been incredibly supportive, and um I'm sure they will continue to be so. Now it's up to us to uh deliver for them um on all the hard work and finances and everything they put into us, and uh and not just for the owners but for the fans, fantastic crowd, over 2,000 there. Again, one of the biggest crowds, uh crowds at our level, and um you know, getting a real atmosphere. I think that atmosphere is improving every week, you know. When although we had during the very first season, we started with some big crowds. I think it's fair to say everybody was finding their position a little bit and where they're gonna go in the crowd and quite have the songs and all of that, but incredibly vocal now and a really, really good atmosphere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Well, we look forward to seeing that again on Saturday. Um, so um, I think what we'll do now is um well, let's uh let's go and listen to what Dwayne and Andrew had to say when we met with them on uh Saturday morning. So welcome everybody. Uh and we've got with us, as planned, two of the investors, Mr. Dwayne DeRazzio and Mr. Andrew Unger. So Dwayne and Andrew, welcome to the Truro City Boardroom. And uh, well, the first question we've got to ask, of course, is you know, what are we what's a guy from Pennsylvania and a guy from Ontario doing in Truro, for goodness sake? So, Andrew, do you want to lead off on that?
SPEAKER_03Well, first and foremost, I'm I'm here for today's match. Uh we're very excited about the match. Um, I've come down to Truro all the way from Toronto, Canada. I brought my two young children. I've got a nine and twelve-year-old who are with me. Big football fans, big Truro City fans. Uh, my wife's with me, so we're here uh to see the match and to and to meet the community and the supporters um in person, and we're very excited about that. And how did you how have you how have you got involved though as an owner of Truro City Football Club? Well, it's a it's a long and sordid tale. Um, but um I'm uh sort of a serial entrepreneur. Okay. And uh this is an opportunity that was brought to me by some friends um uh who are from Toronto, Canada, um, and who were doing uh sports business in the UK. And it was an opportunity that was brought to me, I guess, over three years ago. And I was very interested in being involved in professional sports. It's my first foray into professional sports. And um, you know, I sort of learned about the team and the city and the supporters, and um I was convinced that it would be uh a good investment and a very interesting um investment, and it has proved to be both. Oh well, that's that's good to hear, then isn't it?
SPEAKER_01What about about you, Joan? How have you ended up being involved?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's great. Thanks, Trevor. And um it's it's great to be here, and I always look forward to coming to Truro. I try to get here every every two months uh and really meet with the team and really get a good understanding of where we are as a club. So I my involvement was uh brought through an another club that I've been working with uh in Spain. So I've been involved in a project in Spain for over four years and the third division in Spain, and the um the party, the group that brought me into that project uh had uh started the due diligence and this opportunity uh that was coming right before the grounds were were built in that process, and it sounded like a really interesting project to get involved in. So that that was my uh my introduction to Truro was through my involvement with the club uh in Spain and then and my background uh as as Andrew, entrepreneur and uh also investment management, which is uh really fascinating, always looking for great projects, but projects where I can have an impact and be a positive versus just um funding uh different initiatives. So really really exciting.
SPEAKER_01So uh does that mean Dwayne that you're I know that you're also chairing the Toreau City Football Club Community Trust. So uh you're making an impact. Does that mean you're you're kind of hands-on quite a bit?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. And growing up playing football back in the States, I this the passion for it led me as my son um who is uh 18 years old to start his collegiate career in Florida. Uh I was fortunate enough to run his club for five years, which was a community football club. We had over a thousand players, we had an academy, 150 coaches. So I was fortunate enough to run the club and learn a lot. Um and with regards to the community trust, bringing my experience of running a youth club, uh really having the level of what works, what doesn't work, mistakes we made along the way, how to do better, uh really puts us in a good position to do a great job of laying a foundation for the community trust to really have an impact in Truro and do exciting things.
SPEAKER_01Fantastic. Well, we heard from Will Snapes on uh on I think episode three about the community trust. So, Andrew, you said you're a serial entrepreneur. So uh again, are you uh bringing all your kind of business expertise and skills to Truro City? How close are you to it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, absolutely. Um I I bring what I can. Um uh we have a great local team. Uh I gotta say that um, you know, from top to bottom. I don't want to mention anyone in particular lest I forget anybody. Um so you know, mostly it's uh it's uh a hands-off role and a delegation role. Um, but you know, we have weekly phone calls between ownership and key management personnel. Uh I'm very attuned to what's going on uh both on the business side and on the pitch. Uh we follow all those developments very closely. And uh we do, you know, the team is run here by locals. And uh, you know, Duane and I and a couple of the other uh owners sort of take a delegation, mostly hands-off role, um, with the exception of Dwayne's amazing contribution to the community trust. So um that's sort of the level of my involvement, and I weigh in on key, I would say the key decisions, okay, uh, but not necessarily day-to-day decisions.
SPEAKER_01So uh as part of that is having a kind of vision as to where the club might be in, I don't know, say five years' time. Does that come into that?
SPEAKER_03Yes, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And uh and Duane, what what y is that part of your role as well then? If you're a bit more hands-on to ensure that that's kind of heading in that direction?
SPEAKER_02Well, I would say definitely hands-on in the sense of being a resource. And and uh Andrew has it completely right. We're we're not making individual decisions. Uh the team here is amazing, and they have done an incredible job, everything from the football department to the to the commercials to the operations, and we understand the complexity of it. So we're here to offer our support in any way that we can, be a soundboard, provide guidance. And where I think you look at the club, we're extremely thankful for the community as a whole supporting the club. Uh you look at the attendance numbers, we're extremely uh uh grateful for the sponsors, incredible sponsorship. But again, starting from a level that is was relatively low, and Alex didn't Alex Wack did an incredible job of getting the team to transition through the the challenging times of playing on the road for two years to to where we are. But again, that goes back to the local True community putting the club in a position to succeed and to move forward. But really, again, the the ground team um we're here to support in in any way that we can.
SPEAKER_01And uh we did put a message out, and Andrew said you you said you'd seen these um on the on the Facebook channel. Did anybody want to ask any questions from the community, the fan community? So someone's asked about uh the development of the south side of the ground. So uh do we want to share any information on that at this stage?
SPEAKER_03Uh I'd say it's uh those are ongoing discussions um with details not yet uh fully fleshed out. Definitely uh there will be development on the south side of the ground. Um our new CEO, Robin, is sort of leading those discussions. Uh, he has a very um experienced planning and development team working with him on all of those. And uh we do hope to have news to share about that in the near future, I can say. Okay. Um positive news. I think it's it'll be good for the team, it'll be good for the community. And um and uh yeah, we we we plan to have details to share about that, I would think, sooner rather than later. Okay, well but for the moment they are confidential discuss discussions.
SPEAKER_01Of course, of course. But I think everybody, you know, is is just loves the ground. But of course, once you love something, you want to then think, oh, well, we could maybe tweak it there and make it a little bit better there. So I suppose there's always that ongoing challenge, isn't there, to keep things moving forward. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03And and you know, I think we're just in the the first stage. I mean, the ground is great. There was an expansion of the ground and and uh the uh the stands and uh accommodations for supporters when we made the move from the National League South to the National League. That was part of the requirement were certain upgrades to uh uh for viewing for supporters um around the ground and and to the the pitch itself. So we've we plan to continually upgrade the ground and uh the areas around the ground. Uh I think for me it's uh first and foremost, it's it is it is about the experience when you're at the ground. We we want to deliver a top-notch experience. Um and that can always be improved. Um, and we're always looking for ways to improve that and quite frankly, uh feedback from the community on how we could improve that experience. Because I think that's where it begins uh in terms of passion and support for the club, which we will need for the club to move forward, right? We're gonna need that support to move forward, and so you've got to deliver, I think, an exceptional experience uh at the ground. So I'm really looking forward to it today. We got a sort of special event on today, uh uh tied to the bank holiday. It's a garden party theme, which I'm not too familiar with from Canada, but uh I don't know if that means you bring your shovel or what, but I just know it's gonna be a party and there's gonna be some nice events out there, and uh and it's a big match. It's a big match.
SPEAKER_01It is. Well, it'll be it'll be fascinating. I'm sure you will provide your own feedback on the match to experience that you see in action. Um Duane, the other question was about supporters fans away travel and um I think you suggested to me that uh discussions are going on.
SPEAKER_02Sure. It it I'll touch on a couple things. To address that uh it's a great question and obviously Andrew and I and and the team we follow the Facebook the comments and and this has been an area that we actually had discussions um the last two days on on how can how can we partner up with someone to be able to provide an opportunity for away fan away days to help the fan supporters to get there. So those conversations uh are gonna be an initial we're gonna have those initial conversations to see what we can come up with to um really make it an affordable opportunity just because obviously the distance and um it may not be all of the away matches on the very far distant distance ones, but at least if we can start at some point and get a get a collection of matches that make it sense from the economics for the supporters that we'll do our best to work with different resources in the local Toro area to make that possible. So I think along those lines hopefully our fan supporters saw the the survey that was sent out uh just recently and uh with our partner Wax they did a great job on uh putting that together and sending that out and so we're now we're accumulating uh the results and some of the initial results and this was one of the areas that came up on the initial results was do we have a solution to help us go to away days and to get us there. So that that is definitely on the books we're we're addressing it and hopefully we can come up with a solution um in the in the near future but we'll do our best. Well that's fantastic I would I'd say that one last item as it relates to the the ground uh that we're really excited that the 3G pitch construction has commenced again uh completion and that will just be such a asset for the community uh to have the 3G pitch next to the first team's grounds and we really want to thank the Cornwall Council for all their efforts and that's a partnership. I mean we have a really good relationship with the council and uh we're thankful for their um for their push and to help us get this uh over the finish line and and moving forward so that's that's important the FA, Cornwall FA, again all of these different partners that go into these types of projects uh and working together and finally we're able to see the final stages of completion of that. So hopefully by sometime February March we'll have the community out there playing on that 3G pitch which will be a great asset for for everyone for Truro oh it certainly will it certainly will.
SPEAKER_01Well guys we're we've almost got a game to go to but uh just reminded me uh Andrew when you mentioned the matchday experience when I first got involved I was just a a fan for the first season at the new stadium and I remember going through the turnstiles and handing my ticket over and someone would say oh have a great game Trevor and they'd seen my name on the ticket.
SPEAKER_03They didn't know me they'd seen my name on the ticket and I thought that was a really great start to my match day experience so I don't know if they still do that because I don't go through the turnstiles but hopefully they do but uh I'll I'll I'll I'll check on that I I think that is I think it's a great personal you know the personal touches make a difference right that's a great suggestion so I don't even need that in the Facebook group I'll just take it from you here direct from the podcast and and I'll I'll find out today. I will ask that question.
SPEAKER_01Well it's a bit like going to get your hair cut isn't it if you've been a couple of times and then they welcome you back in and they remembered your name it doesn't make a difference. Now before we uh before we get to the match guys I just want to read this to you because um we have a thing called fan mail on the podcast um and this is from uh this is from a guy called Tim Singleton and Tim says hey guys my name is Tim Singleton I'm a new fan from the USA I've spent six months looking for a new team and settled on the Tinners. Thank you for the podcast keeps me up to date and I learn something new every week and I think that's from Minnesota according to this so so the word is spreading gentlemen and um it's great to know that there are fans maybe not at every game here in Churro but certainly staying in touch and watching from around the world and uh what a great thing to build a great big global fan community that would be so there we go.
SPEAKER_03So well I just say you have a lot you have a lot of supporters in Canada in Toronto Canada my whole I have a big network of friends and family and they followed you know the meteoric rise of of our promotion season and and uh and they followed the struggles last season and and it's a compelling story right it is a compelling story and uh so you've got a lot of fans in Toronto Canada as well um I know they wish they could be watching all the matches live again um so uh but but they definitely follow all the social medias and uh so I'll keep I'll keep uh growing the fan base in in Toronto Canada and the surrounding areas they've i i've been asked to bring back like too much gear um but there were too many requests we were traveling down like I said I'm here with with my kids my wife and and one of my best my my best friends um who's sitting next to me we'll just leave him nameless Dr. Quinn um and I said you know on the way back you're gonna have a big duffel bag on your lap in the back because I I I asked for a big duffel bag full of gear because people are saying like how do we get this in Canada I said don't worry I'm going I'm gonna bring it all back for you so okay this is like shirts and things like that. Yeah shirts tukes we you know we're from Canada so you know shirts are nice but really what we need is tokes for the minus 30 days and scarves and that sort of thing. So I'm a little afraid how I'm gonna get that in the car and then back to Canada's okay just give it to the airlines but back to the car and up to London.
